Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few entrants often get baffled. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
While it seems complicated at first, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting range of betting options and owing to the fact that you have several individuals shooting for the high, as well as a few trying for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
