Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants often get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
